We try to find our way through the crowds of people in the main street of Old Town where lots of food stands are awaiting us with the most delicious dishes.

By now we are pretty hungry and are happy to find some nice vegetarian food: vegetable rolls and a tasty dish with noodles, fresh vegetables and tofu, served on a banana leave. It is busy with tourists as well as locals and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. The street musicians are adding a nice musical touch to this in the streets aligned by old Portuguese- colonial houses.

Tin mining, a source of big wealth

In the 18th century, the Chinese started with the building of this time. A lot of money was earned by them though the tin mining, so they built giant mansions. About a century later the Europeans, like the English and Portuguese, were also admitted in the country for the tin mining. Tin was a very valuable metal in that time and the Europeans had their eyes set on this area already for a long time. Especially the Portuguese had a big influence on the architecture of Old Town, which makes that you feel like walking somewhere in southern Europe. Tasty Asiatic food in a south European setting: a special experience.
