A week sailing from Thailand to Sri Lanka: A meditation retreat full adventure

The sky pitch dark and the wind hauling in the rigging… Yemaya is moving severely and we have to hold tight. Behind us the waves are mounting high. They look like white monsters, lightened up by the fluorescent plankton, trying to get to us, but failing each time. Through the dense wall of rain we try to spot the little lights of the fishing boats surrounding us. We are not alone in this restless night. Now and than the lightening is throwing her spooky gloom over the ocean. While we are keeping Yemaya on track, our little cats, Yodah and Sita are curiously peeping outside from the saloon. They would love to join us on deck to see what is happening. Luckily we can convince them to stay safely inside where it is dry and warm. But it is fascinating: the play of intense darkness with the light of the waves, the lightening and the rain.

These kind of nights are very rare and if you know how to cope with situations like this, there is no danger. The lack of sleep is the only damage done. Most of the nights during this crossing however are actually very beautiful. Clear skies with millions of stars lightening up the ocean. Almost every night we are accompanied by groups of dolphins, playing around the boat. They are like shining, magical creatures, leaving a tail of sparkling stars behind them. A real lightshow! You can see this phenomenon during nights without the moon and lot of plankton in the ocean. Beautiful to look at and this time the sleepless nights are caused by not being able to stop watching. A meditative moment: to feel the joyful and intense energy of the dolphins in the stillness of the darkness.

Deep silence on the infinite blue ocean: a meditation in itself

Each time when we pick up the anchor to sail into the vast ocean, we feel a deep relaxation engulfing us. Almost relief and a feeling of intense freedom as soon as we leave the noisy and hectic land to embrace the coolness of the sea. As the days at sea are proceeding, we sink deeper and deeper in silence. Our inner silence touched by the silence and serenity surounding us. This silence goes beyond the physical phenomena and can not be touched by it. It doesn’t change whether the waves are high or not, the wind strong or mild… even if we have a squall like described before. This intense silence is always there.

Each time when we set sail for long crossings, it feels like going on a meditation retreat in which we can reconnect with our inner being. The vast ocean is like a Mother to us who carries us and protect us. But we also respect her deeply because she can crush us with her immense power like an elephant can crush an ant. When you are at sea for days or even weeks you can only do one thing: surrender to her and sink deeper and deeper in the depths of your inner being. We have realised by now that sailing on the ocean can have a very purifying effect on the mind and that is why we love to combine the sailing with meditation in our holidays to get to a deeper state of relaxation and stillness.
