In the north west of Malaysia, bordering Thailand, you can find the state Kedah. Most famous because of the group of islands some 30 km off shore surrounded by the green, turquoize waters of the Andaman sea. When you are sailing in Langkawi you can understand why they call these islands the ‘Jewel of Kedah’: countless little islands covered with rainforest and aligned by white beaches creating a myriad of little passages where you can sail through. Most of the islands are uninhabited and some of them show dramatic rock formations. After the busy big cities of Melaka and Penang it was like arriving in a haven of silence where the sweet scent of flowers welcomed us tenderly. Langkawi has an international reputation as an unspoiled holiday destination.

The Langkawi archipelago consists of 99 islands. The 10,000 hectares of Langkawi and its islands were declared a Geopark by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 2007. Only on the main island Langkawi you can find some cities. Not so busy as what we saw before but still enough life and facilities to find what you need. Langkawi is a Duty Free island. Perfect for shopping! The tax free shops, especially for good chocolate in our case, are seducing us in the center of Kuah.

There are several meanings of the word Langkawi, but this one we think is most appropriate: ‘Helang’ meaning eagle and ‘kawi’ meaning reddish-brown. These islands are the home of loads of eagles. You see them everywhere. We are not surprised anymore to see a giant bird diving into the water next to us while sailing in Langkawi. Some weeks ago we were still a bit shaky to let Mali, the little puppy we found screaming and badly wounded on a Chinese grave in Melaka, walk over the deck: a small black moving spot on a white surface…  must look very tasty!

There are two kinds of eagles on Langkawi: The reddish brown ‘ Brahminy kite’ with its white head and breast. These you see the most. The  second kind, the bigger ‘White bellied’ eagle, we also spot regurlary. One of the chief attractions for eco-tourists out here is feeding the huge wild sea eagles. In the middle of a large estuary. When scraps of fish was throws overboard, there are 20-30 reddish-brown sea eagles and huge white Brahminy Kites with wing spans of more than a metre circling overhead, taking turns to swoop in for meal.

They like to soar high in the sky most of the time in groups. With their tremendous sharp eyesight they can spot and pin point their prey from a hight of 1-3 km. When they dive down they can reach up to 200 km per hour. They are able to lift a prey with a weight of more than their own weight out of the water.

Since we are here we are surprised by the variety Langkawi has to offer. Besides the unspoiled nature of the little islands, there is also the natural wonder of the river delta of Kilim Geopark, north east of the main island. To take a dinghy ride through the mangroves and spot the wildlife here is more than worth while. The mangroves around Langkawi are some of the best preserved anywhere. For monkeys though, you can just rent a scooter and drive the roads. Groups of them are sitting there, waiting for some food ‘falling’ out of the cars. Renting a scooter is a nice way to visit the island anyway. The beautiful nature on the north side of the island, the city Kuah or Cenang beach… A nice mix of everything and when you get hungry you can have a delicious meal in one of the very affordable restaurants.

The countless pretty bays in stunning natural surroundings make our sailing hearts beat a bit faster. The light to moderate winds make that the waters are quiet and Yemaya glides smoothly through the ocean. Real gentleman sailing.

The distances in between the islands are perfect for combining a pleasant, relaxing sail of a few hours with a nice walk in the cool afternoon breeze. Some islands offer great jungle hikes to beautiful waterfalls where you can sit for hours, just meditating and enjoying nature.

Langkawi is absolutely a sailing area where you will never get bored. It is still easy to find a little bay just for yourself alone to spend the night and to enjoy the jungle sounds and the starlit sky.
